Do This, Not That

Whew, you’re in luck! One of your loved ones was approved for a bail bond and you’re free from the confines of jail. It’s time to celebrate. Right? Well, not so fast. Just because you’ve been released from jail doesn’t mean you can do anything and everything you want – bummer. However, look on the bright side – you’re not sitting in a lifeless jail cell awaiting your court date.

So before we get into the nitty-gritty of what exactly you’re not allowed to do while out on bail, let’s focus on the positive aspects of bail and all the great things that you can participate in. While you’re out on bail, it’s important that you continue to live your life as normally as you can. This means that you should continue to go to work, spend as much time with your family as you can, participate in community activities, and most importantly, go to your scheduled court date.

Now that we’ve touched on the things that you can do while you’re out on bail, let’s take a closer look at the top three things you shouldn’t do.

Don’t leave the country – Depending on the clauses in your bail agreement, you may not be allowed to leave the country. While this might seem a little harsh depending on how long you have to wait for your court date, your bail bondsman is taking a huge risk by letting you leave the country – especially if the country doesn’t extradite individuals back to the United States. If you HAVE to leave, be sure to talk to your bail bondsman so they know why you are leaving, how long you will be gone, and where you are going.
Don’t get arrested – There is nothing that legally states you cannot get arrested while out on bail. If you do, you will likely forfeit your original bail agreement. This means that you will lose the premium for the first arrest and then be forced to take out two more bail bonds. Sound expensive? It is. So don’t risk it and just stay out of trouble.
Don’t miss your scheduled court date – This seems pretty obvious but it’s the most important item on the list. If you do not show up to your scheduled court appointment, your bail could be revoked and could result in a bounty hunter being sent to find out. If you’ve ever seen the show Dog the Bounty Hunter then you know this isn’t something you want to mess with. Not to mention the fact that your bail bond agency is going to be much less likely to approve you for another bail bond. Again, don’t upset your bail bond agency and just show up to court. You’ll be happy you did.
