What to Do During an Evacuation

By | Carls Bail Bonds

What to Do During an Evacuation

In the state of California, wildfires are fairly common. The weather and climate here makes it easy for wildfires to spread and grow out of control. Due to this fact, it is important that everyone know what they need to do in case they ever need to evacuate due to a fire.

Before an evacuation is ever ordered, or a fire has even begun to spread, it is important to have things prepared. This way, if an evacuation is ordered, you will be ready to handle it. Cal Fire recommends creating an evacuation checklist. This will help ensure you grab everything important in the event of an evacuation. Some of the things that should be included on this list are:

• Necessary medications
• Important papers and photos
• Essential valuables
• Transport for pets and/or livestock and some food for those animals
• Spare clothes
• Toiletries
• Cell phone
• An evacuation map with at least 2 routes on it

In the event that a fire breaks out, and an evacuation may be ordered for your area, use your evacuation list and begin grabbing everything on it. Pack up your car, and have it facing out of the driveway. Keep pets close by in case an evacuation is ordered.

Once an evacuation is ordered, follow the instructions of local law enforcement agencies.

No one wants to leave there home and risk never seeing it again due to a fire. However, leaving is the best thing to do. It helps keep you safe and out of the way so emergency officials can do their job.

Fake Amazon Email Scam

Fake Amazon Email Scam

With Christmas around the corner, many consumers are taking to shopping online to get the perfect gifts for their friends and family members. This means a lot of people will be using Amazon, and scammers know this. They are taking advantage of this increase in shopping to hopefully catch people off guard.

All Amazon shoppers need to be wary of a new email scam that is currently going around. The email is designed to look like it is an official email from Amazon Customer Services. The email claims that there was a problem with the person’s last order, and that it cannot be shipped until the person validates their information. The email offers a link that when clicked takes the person to a site that resembles Amazon, but is not the official site. If a person puts there info into this site, they give it to the scammers.

Amazon has issued a warning about this, as well as advice on how to avoid these kinds of scams in the future. If you receive an email supposedly from Amazon and it wants any of the following, it is probably a scam.

• Something went wrong, or a confirmation about an order you didn’t place.
• Requests for your username and password.
• Requests to update payment information.
• Links to websites that are similar to Amazon, but are not actually Amazon.
• Requests or attachments to install software.
• Typos and grammatical errors.
• An email address that doesn’t end with “@amazon.com”

If you see any of this in an email, it is most likely a scam. However, if you feel that you need to check your account on Amazon to be sure, go to Amazon on your own and access your account from there. Never use links in suspicious emails.

Lastly, to be sure that you are, in fact, on the official Amazon site, check the URL. All websites that deal with financial information have a URL that starts with https, not http. If there is no s, then you are not on Amazon.

Amazon, as well as every other online retailer, will not require their customers to provide information over email. They definitely will not ask for social security numbers for verification either. Learn to recognize scams, and you will be a lot safer when you shop online.

Don’t Forget Your Pets

By | Carls Bail Bonds

Don’t Forget Your Pets

It’s that time of year where traveling, shopping, and stressing over family gatherings are a typical thing. With this being a stressful time, folks often forget about their furry companions.

For starters, Christmas trees and pets can be a dangerous combination. Cats have a tendency to chew, and play with the ornaments and tree. If a tree isn’t anchored properly, it can fall over and do some serious damage.

Tinsel can also be a hazard for pets as well. With tinsel being shiny, pets may be tempted to try to eat it. Cats and dogs are thrilled to chew bits and pieces of the glittering decoration. The same applies to having holly or mistletoe in the house as well. Both holly and mistletoe are poisonous to your pets, so you may want to opt for the fake kind.

Try to avoid over feeding pets this holiday season. Sure it’s fun to sneak them the occasional leftover piece of meat. However, what may be okay for humans to eat, may not be okay for a pet. Also don’t spoil your pet with treats. Treats may be safe for your pet in moderation, but should not be given in substitution for a meal.

If you ever doubt what is safe for your pet this holiday season, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends getting in contact with a veterinarian.

Tips and Tricks for Family Gatherings

Tips and Tricks for Family Gatherings

The Holidays can be stressful with trying to figure out how to cook a turkey, to making travel arrangements. To add to the stress, holidays also involve major family time. It’s time to get together with family members you haven’t seen in years. This can be the most stressful part of the holidays for some.

WebMD suggests that this time of year is stressful because it brings up unwanted memories and unhealthy relationships. Unwanted memories could consist of grief from a family member passing, embarrassing family stories, and uncomfortable situations for you. Unhealthy relationships would be considered relationships where you don’t feel like you’re being understood by the other. Another unhealthy relationship may be where you are constantly being harassed by someone.

Psychology Today released an article saying that they are three choices in dealing with an unhealthy relationship:

• Maintain the Status Quo
• Try to Change the Other
• Change Yourself

If you decide to maintain the status quo, you’ll have to accept that your relationship with this person will not change. This means accepting that Aunt Karen will always make you feel bad for not having a significant other, a mansion, three different “useful” master degrees, and a “real job”.

If you decide to try to change the other person you will need to keep an open mind, and prepare for any possible outcome. Even though you may want to yell at Aunt Karen for always belittling you, this is not the most productive way to change the relationship.

Finally, if you decide to give into Aunt Karen’s demands and change yourself, you’re taking the high road. By changing yourself you can either change your mind set about the situation, or change your feelings.

Whatever option you decide to go with this holiday season, just remember to have fun and enjoy those family members that don’t get on your last nerves.

Things to Know When Traveling this Season

Things to Know When Traveling this Season

It’s that magical time a year again when families get together to celebrate the holidays. Modern transportation has made getting together for family traditions easier. However, traveling can still be tricky for some. Navigating airports, roadways, and bus/train stations can be overwhelming. Here are a few tips and tricks to make traveling this season easier.

Buy transportation tickets as early as possible. Whether you plan on traveling by bus, plane, or train, the later you wait to buy your ticket, the more in demand that seat becomes. With a higher demand the prices are likely to sky rocket.

Book your plane tickets strategically. According to Fare Compare, the best day to buy a plane ticket is Tuesday around 3 p.m. eastern time. This is when airlines release their competitive prices for seats. However Time.com released an article, Actually, Tuesday Isn’t the Cheapest Day to Buy Plane Tickets, and suggests that buying a ticket on Tuesday doesn’t always guarantee the best price. However, Time highly recommends that people avoid purchasing tickets on Sunday, and suggests that Thursday is another great day to purchase tickets. Fare Compare also recommends traveling mid-week for cheaper seats. This is because traveling during the week is less popular for families who wish to take advantage of the weekend and miss as little school or work as possible.

Schedule your trip so you arrive early. Many people forget that everyone else is trying to go home for the holidays too. With unpredictable weather and traffic, it is common to experience delays in your travel plans, so be prepared!

Hand sanitizer will save you this holiday season. It can help protect you from unwanted germs, this is the season for colds and flus after all. No one wants to be missing out on all the grand festivities.

Dress comfortably while traveling this season. Traveling is already stressful enough, at least do it in comfort. If you’re flying, or driving long distance, being comfortable can help take the edge off.

Did You Know You Can Track Santa?

Old Saint Nick is coming to town this holiday season. He’s checking his list, and he’s going to be taking a trip around the world to deliver presents. With the help of modern technology we can now track Santa Claus as he makes his journey.

Google has a fun, interactive way to keep tabs on Kris Kringle. By typing “Santa Tracker” into the Google search box, you will be able to pull up the Santa Village. Once you’ve clicked on that you will have access to the Village, which has a new game for every day in December. On December 24 you’ll be able to help the village track Santa on his Christmas Eve trip.

Another popular tracker is the Official North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Santa Tracker. This one is more realistic and high tech. They have real time temperature of the North Pole, as well as games. The website has a Christmas playlist, and fun facts about NORAD. The even have a section of top secret files on Santa Claus.

There are several apps that claim to track Santa as well. For android there is Google Santa Tracker, and for IOS there is Where is Santa Lite. Keeping track of Santa this season will be easier than ever, thanks to our advanced technology and tracking systems. This is a great way to keep kids entertained around Christmas, and keep them believing in the magic that is Santa Claus.

The Cold Weather Is Here

The Cold Weather Is Here

Colder weather is rolling in and we need to be ready. Winter is less than a month away and with freezing temperatures in the forecast, we must be prepared to drive to work in less than ideal conditions.

“Winter is coming,” says any Game of Thrones fan, and they aren’t lying.

Winter starts December 21 and lasts till March 20. This weather can be inconvenient and take a deadly turn if you aren’t prepared. AAA, a nationwide roadside assistance and insurance company, offers several recommendations for commuters driving in hazardous conditions.

AAA states the following on their website:
“Avoid driving while you’re fatigued. Make certain your tires are properly inflated. Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up. Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand). Always look and steer where you want to go. Use your seatbelt every time you get into your vehicle.”

The colder weather brings out many fun activities. The overbearing heat of summer is finally fading away and the mountain are starting to receive snow. This brings out the snowboarders, and skiers while drivers begin grabbing the chains for their tires. Snow reports start appearing as beach reports start to phase out. Luckily, here in California, we will not experience the harsher weather that the rest of the country will. Most Californians will mainly experience sunshine with the occasional stormy day.

More DUI Checkpoints around Holidays

If you are out driving around near the holidays, you might have noticed an increase in DUI checkpoints. This is typical of any holiday where people drink more alcohol than usual. Officers know that drinking will increase around the holidays, which will lead to an increase in drunk drivers.

The goal of these DUI checkpoints is to reduce the amount of drunk drivers that are on the road. By doing this, officers can save hundreds of lives from being involved in a drunk driving accident. While checkpoints may slow down traffic, they help keeping everyone on the road safe.

Many people do not know that they are allowed to avoid DUI checkpoints, provided they do so without breaking any traffic laws. This is why DUI checkpoint locations are announced ahead of time, to allow people to plan their routes accordingly.

When a person approaches a checkpoint, they can expect to run into a bit of traffic. When they get to the front of their line they should wait until an officer motions for them to move forward. From there, the officer will ask a few questions, and may ask to see the driver’s license and registration. After this, if the officer has no reason to suspect that the driver has been drinking, the driver will be allowed to continue to their destination.

However, if the officer has reason to believe that the driver has been drinking, the driver will need to pull over to a designated area. From there, an officer will conduct a field sobriety test to officially determine if the driver is drunk. Depending on the situation, the driver could then be arrested, forced to sit in a drunk tank, or need to wait for a sober driver to pick them up.

DUI checkpoints may slow down traffic, but they help save lives by keeping drunk drivers off of the streets. It is only natural that more checkpoints start popping up around days where heavy drinking occurs.

What Is a Statute of Limitations?

By | Carls Bail Bonds

What Is a Statute of Limitations?

Everyone knows that when something bad happens to them, they typically have the ability to take legal action. This allows them to get compensation to take care of any bills that might have encountered due to the incident. What many people do not realize, is that there is a time limit for when they can seek legal compensation for different crimes.

This is referred to as a statute of limitations. Every single crime in the state of California has a statute of limitations. This means that a person has a set amount of time a person can seek legal compensation. After the time has passed, a person can no longer seek legal compensation for that incident.

The length of the statute of limitations is dependent on the crime or incident. Since the statute of limitations varies from case to case, it can be hard to give specifics. However, here are a few general examples.

• 2 years for injuries caused by negligence.
• 3 years for injuries that resulted from domestic violence.
• 3 years for medical malpractice
• 4 years for a breach of a written contract.

Those are just a few examples of different statute of limitations within the state of California. For more specific information about certain crimes or incidents and their statutes of limitation, a person should consider seeking advice from an experienced lawyer.

Do You Want to Be Able to Reach Your Favorite Sites?

Anyone who has been on the internet lately has probably heard about Net neutrality and how the Federal Communications Commission is looking to replace it. AS many might have picked up on, this is a very big deal. Net neutrality if very important for anyone who likes using the internet. With it gone, the internet will become a very different place.

The main concept, in basic terms, is this: Net neutrality makes it so that all websites and services are treated equally by internet service providers. This means that each site is allowed the same speed and connectivity as every other site on the web.

Without net neutrality, internet service providers such as Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and many others will be able to do whatever they what with internet speeds. They will be able to slow data speeds for YouTube unless the company pays a premium rate. Providers will be able to block sites unless their customer pays to have access to those sites. Basically, the internet service providers will be able to make more money off of their customers and the website companies themselves.

This is why so many large corporations are against the removal of net neutrality. Companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Netflix are all in favor of net neutrality, and for good reason. Without this protection, internet providers will be able to run rampant, and that will drastically affect the people who use sites like Netflix and Google.

Imagine only being able to use Bing instead of Google because Bing is paying Verizon to let their site be available to Verizon customers. Sounds insane, but is entirely possible if net neutrality is repealed. What makes this worse, is that this kind of situation is not a far stretch for many of these internet providers. They have tried to do similar things in the past, and were stopped because of net neutrality.

So, if you want to keep the internet as it is, free, then you want to keep net neutrality around. It is the only thing keeping internet service providers from completely screwing over their clients. You can do your part by contacting the FCC and your Representatives. Let them know that removing net neutrality is a terrible idea.

Roads can become parking lots, and airports are filled to the brim with travelers looking to fly to their destination.

To help avoid any nightmare travel situations when it comes to flying, here are a few tips to help you out.

Choose the right dates. When it comes to flying, choosing the right dates can be very important. Choosing the same day as everyone else can lead to a lot of headaches dealing with crowds. Everybody wants to get the longest weekend possible while not missing too many days of work. Figure out what days those are and avoid them. If you can avoid those particular days, you can avoid a lot of the crowds.
Shop for the best deals. As with any purchase, a person should shop around when looking to book a flight. This can help you get the best deal available at the time. Also, do not be afraid to check flights from other local airports. You may be able to find a better deal at another airport that is close by.
Plan your flight carefully. Layovers can be a nightmare during the holiday season. This is largely due to flight delays brought on by bad weather. When choosing flights, be sure to avoid short connection times. This can prevent you from missing a flight due to a delay and help keep you from needing to make a mad dash through the airport.
Leave early. During the holidays, it is important to leave for the airport earlier than usual. More people are traveling around that time and therefore there will be more delays. Leaving earlier than usual will help account for those delays and ensure you do not miss your flight.
Above everything else, stay calm. The most important thing is to always stay calm, no matter what happens. You want the airline employees to be your friend, and that will be unlikely if you are angry or rude with them.

Tips for Preventing Package Theft

As Christmas approaches, more and more people turn to online shopping to buy gifts for their friends and family members. This leads to an increase in packages being delivered to their houses, which can be problematic. Thieves love it when they see a package sitting unattended on a porch. They may not know what they are stealing, but they know they can easily take it.

No one wants to have their package stolen, especially when it is a gift for someone else. That is why it is important that everyone takes extra precautions when buying things online. You do not want to give thieves an opportunity to steal your package.

Luckily, most delivery services and online retailers provide their clients with options to help prevent package theft.

• Always get a tracking number for the package. This will allow you to know when the package will be delivered, and make sure that someone is there to collect it for you.
• FedEx and USPS allow customers to schedule deliveries for a set time, thus ensuring someone will be home to get the package.
• If possible, leave delivery instructions. FedEx allows clients to leave instructions on where the box should be left, such as at the back door instead of the front door.
• Request that a signature be needed for the delivery. This way, if no one is home, the package will not be left at the door unattended.
• Try having the package delivered somewhere other than your home. FedEx and UPS will allow you to have a package delivered to a neighbor or your work.
• Opt for instore pickup. Many retailers allow for items to be ordered online and picked up in a store with no extra charge.

When ordering something online, look at the delivery options. Many retailers provide their clients with different options to make the delivery as convenient and safe as possible. By choosing a more secure delivery option, the person is ensuring that they, not a thief, get their package.

Staying Safe on Winter Roads

As a kid, winter is a lot of fun. Winter brings storms, which in turn bring snow which can lead to extra days off from school, and all the while, the thought of Christmas is hanging in the air. While this is all great as a kid, as an adult things prove to be a little more difficult, especially when it comes to snow.

Driving can already be a bit of a hassle, thanks to the increase in traffic, but the bad weather can make things worse. Driving in the rain or snow can be dangerous if a person is not prepared, or lacks any experience with the matter. To help take care of that, here are some winter driving tips.

• Slow down on wet roads. Water on the roads can reduce friction, which will make it easy for cars to slide across the road without any control when at high speeds. Slowing down just a little bit can reduce the chances of this happening to you. If the vehicle you are driving starts to hydroplane, do not slam on the brakes as doing so will take away what little control you have. Instead, take your foot of the gas pedal and let the vehicle slow naturally. Once it slows enough, the tires will regain traction and you will have control of the vehicle again.
• Slow everything down on frozen roads. Snow and ice reduce the grip your tires can get on roads far more than water. To compensate for this, a person needs to not only drive slower, but accelerate and brake at a slower pace as well. Accelerating too quickly can cause a car to spin out, while braking too suddenly will cause the car to slide.
• Always use headlights. Headlights not only allow you to see better while driving, they allow other drivers to see you better. This can help prevent other cars from hitting you when visibility is low.
• The best advice for driving in bad weather, is to avoid driving in bad weather. When the weather is bad, a person should only head out on the road if they visalia caly have to. If they can avoid going out, they should.

By following these tips, you will be able to stay safe on the roads this winter.

More Checkpoints Around Holidays

DUI checkpoints can be intimidating to people, even when they have done nothing wrong. When it comes to DUI checkpoints, the only people who need to worry, are the ones who were drinking before they got behind the wheel of their vehicle. These checkpoints increase in frequency around holidays, especially ones that involve a lot of partying.

The police know that people tend to drink more around holidays. This leads to an increase in drunk driving incidents. That is why the police set up more DUI checkpoints around holidays like Christmas and New Year’s. The goal is to save lives by reducing the amount drunk driving incidents that can occur.

When a person comes across a checkpoint, they will likely encounter a line of cars. One by one, a team of officers will each call forward a vehicle to interview the driver. The officers will ask where the driver is headed, where they came from, and have they been drinking. They will also ask to see the driver’s license and registration.

So long as the driver cooperates, and the officer does not suspect that the driver has been drinking, the driver will be able to go on their way. However, if the officer does suspect that the driver has been drinking, then the driver will be asked to pull over to the side. From there, another officer will likely issue a field sobriety test. If the driver fails this, he or she will be held until they sober up, or someone comes to pick them up.

DUI checkpoints are nothing to be afraid of. They are only meant to catch drunk drivers. These checkpoints catch hundreds of drunk drivers, and keep the streets safe for everyone on the road.

Stay Safe While Shopping

During the holiday season, everyone spends quite a bit of time shopping. They have to find the perfect gifts for their friends and family members. Some people take to online shopping, while others flock to brick and mortar stores. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Thieves love the holiday season because more and more people are out in the about. The chances for the thief finding an easy mark greatly increase during the holidays. If you are like most people, you do not want to be an easy mark for these thieves.

There are a few things that you can do while out shopping to keep yourself safe.

• Shop during the day to avoid be alone in a parking lot at night. If you have to shop at night or late in the evening, park under a street lamp to ensure good visibility around your car.
• Have your keys ready to go before you get to your car. You do not want to be stuck searching for your keys as this can leave you vulnerable.
• Dress comfortably and casually. Dressing in expensive and fancy clothes can make yourself appear to be a more valuable target than other shoppers.
• Don’t carry more money than you will need for that particular shopping trip. In fact, try to pay with checks or credit cards as much as possible. This eliminates the amount of money that thief could potentially take.
• Avoid carrying too many packages at once. You want to be able to see where you are going, and still have the freedom to move around if need be.
• If your credit card is lost or stolen, report it to the credit card company right away. This will ensure that no one can use it and spend your hard earned money.
• Try not to use a purse or wallet when shopping, since these are prime targets for thieves. Instead, keep necessary cash and cards in your front pocket where it is harder for thieves to reach them.
• Be wary of strangers approaching you. Thieves can work in tag teams to distract you and take your belongings.
• Always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. You do not want someone sneaking up on you.

By following these tips, you should be able to have a safe shopping experience this holiday season. That is all anyone could ask for.

Are You Using These Words Correctly

Are You Using These Words Correctly

There are dozens of words within the English language that are misused regularly. This is not a surprising fact. With some many words within our language, everyone will misuse a word from time to time. All a person can do is learn from the mistake, and try not to repeat it.

In most instances of misused words, the reason is that the words is very similar to another word. Some examples of this include:
Accept & Except – Accept means to receive, as in a person can accept an award. Except means excluding something, such as a person will do everything, except that.
Sight & Site – Sight is a person’s ability to see. Get out of my sight. Site is a location, such as a website. Stay out of that construction site.
Than & Then – Than is used to make comparisons. For example, that house is bigger than our house. Then is used when talking about time. First we will do this, then we will do that.
There, Their, & They’re – There is used when talking about a place. He rode his bike over there. There is a possessive pronoun, which means it shows that a person owns something. That bike is theirs. They’re, is a contraction of they and are. They’re on their bikes right now.
To, Too, & Two – To is a preposition, and is usually the one that people want to use. Too is an adverb that usually means also or in addition. An example would be: You’re in trouble too. Two, simply means the number 2.
Your & You’re – Your is another possessive pronoun. This is your seat. You’re, is a contraction of you and are. You’re going to sit over there.

With these words, it is easy to see why they get mixed up and misused. However, there are some words out there that are not similar to other words, and yet they are still misused. Some examples include:
Alright – Alright is not a word. What people mean is all right.
Disinterested – A person who is disinterred is a person who not biased, not a person who is uninterested in the situation.
Flounder – Flounder means to flop around, like a fish out of water. It does not mean to sink to the bottom.
Irregardless – Irregardless is not a word. What people mean to use is regardless.
Literally – Literally means actually, not figuratively. Basically, if something literally happened, it actually happened.

This is just a small sample of words that are often misused within the English language. There are hundreds of words out there that are misused. Some of them are misused so frequently by some people that other people believe that they are being used correctly when in fact, they are not. Luckily, everyone misuses words from time to time, so it is nothing to be embarrassed about.
